YEAR THREE CLASS NEWS

Welcome to Term Two! Year Three children have begun Term Two with lots of enthusiasm. They are eager to begin exploring the location of Australian states, territories, capital cities and major regional centres of Western Australia.

In Religious Education, the Year Threes will begin the term focusing on moral choices and how, like Jesus, we can choose what is right.  They will then focus upon Jesus’ promise of the Holy Spirit to strengthen His followers. The unit introduces the children to the power of the Holy Spirit and how Catholics today receive this special strength of the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Confirmation.

The Year Threes will explore the human experience of belonging to a community. This leads children to wonder about God, who gave us our communities.

During English, the Year Three children will develop their reading skills of comprehension, accuracy, fluency and vocabulary. They will continue to use comprehension strategies, focusing on connecting, skimming, scanning and inferential questioning. The Year Threes will be exposed to a variety of text types in particular recounts and information reports. The children will complete an assignment about a ‘special place’ in Australia which they will present to the class. They will continue to study the patterns in words and learn new sounds to assist in our spelling.

In Mathematics, the children will investigate the relationship between addition and subtraction and use this understanding to solve everyday problems that they encounter. The children will also investigate fractions in everyday situations and create written, pictorial and physical representations of halves, thirds, quarters, and fifths. Time will be a large focus of our learning and we encourage every child to be exposed to analogue clocks at home. The Year Three children will learn how to read analogue clocks to the minute and develop an understanding of the relationship between common units of time.  They will discover angles in our classroom and classify them according to size. The language of chance will also be developed and they will be encouraging children to use these words regularly in their daily vocabulary. The children will continue to play games, chant, write and sing their times tables to develop fluency.

Our Humanities and Social Sciences Integrated Studies programme will focus on the children understanding the location of the states, territories, capital cities and other major features of Australia. They will discover the major attractions of our country and develop an awareness of our continent. The children will look at how each capital city is unique and how different cultural groups have shaped our nation. In Visual Art they will develop their artistic skills as they paint Australian landmarks and design their own landmark using clay. The children will also use computational thinking as they learn how to create multi-touch games about Australia.

In Week Five the children will learn from the wider community as they participate in an excursion to Perth City. The students will explore natural and man-made features and use primary sources to discover how these features of Perth have changed over time. More information regarding this event will be available in the coming weeks.

In Health this term with Mrs King, the students will focus on developing their personal and social skills.  They will describe how respect and empathy can positively influence relationships. They will also identify and practise strategies that promote health, safety and wellbeing that ensures the safety of themselves and others, particularly in the playground.

This term in Physical Education with Miss Witkowski, the Year Three children will be working on their fitness by practising for our Cross Country Carnival later this term. They will also be developing their movement skills by navigating an obstacle course and their Fundamental Movement Skills by learning basic basketball skills.

In Italian with Signora Formato the children will learn the names for different family members. They will focus on how the Italian language changes depending upon gender.

During Science classes with Mr Capolingua, he will be exploring with the children Biological Sciences. Mr Capolingua is studying Biological Science with the children this term. The children will be learning that living things can be grouped on the basis of observable features and can be distinguished from non-living things.

Technology plays a large part in the Year Three curriculum. It is important that along with developing technological skills, the children develop a respect and understanding of the Internet. We are continuing to teach the children about digital citizenship but we encourage you to keep an open communication with your child about using technology responsibly. Lessons in the iLab with Miss Phoebe will continue to take place every Thursday where the children will finish their work with programming the Ozobot robots and begin to learn about coding. Coding is an essential skill that teaches the students how to solve problems and work together in creative ways.  The Year Three’s will be completing a mix of unplugged (not using a device) and plugged in activities to build up their basic programming vocabulary. They will begin by learning about simple commands, functions and loops using the App, Swift Playgrounds.

STUDENT MINISTRIES: PUBLIC RELATIONS NEWS

ANZAC Day is the day that we remember all those who have fought for our country. On ANZAC Day many people wake up early in the morning and go to the Dawn Service.

At Infant Jesus School we commemorated ANZAC Day on Monday 30 April. At the beginning of the commemoration we introduced and shared the history and importance of ANZAC Day. We then explained why the Australian flag was at half-mast. We reflected on Gospel reading and joined in the prayers of the faithful. Some Year 6 and Year 1 students laid floral wreaths at the flagpole.

The Last Post was then played. This was followed by a minute of silence and Roust when the Australian flag was raised. We concluded the commemoration with the National Anthem.

It was a very reflective and memorable occasion.

An Anzac Day Prayer

We Thank you God

For giving us the ANZACs, who protected our country.

Many of them were wounded and many of them died as a result of the wars.

With the sacrifices that they made our country is a safe place.

We give thanks for their courage as they helped to bring peace to many countries around the world.

Amen

They shall not grow old

As we that are left grow old

Age shall not weary them

Nor the years condemn

At the going down of the sun

And in the morning

We will remember them.
