HEALTH NEWS Years 3-6

Health classes this semester in Years 3 – 6 have encompassed many different aspects of Personal, Social and Community Health.  The children have embraced the learning with a positive mindset and have demonstrated improved understanding of how Health Education connects so cleverly to all aspects of the human body.

To begin our learning this semester, the children were introduced to the six focus elements that incorporate personal health and well-being.  These elements included; Emotional, Physical, Spiritual, Nutritional, Social and Cognitive Health. From this point, the children created lists of health aspects that could relate to each of these elements. They then made connections and links to each of the six elements.

It was very obvious from the responses the children offered, that they possess an enormous amount of knowledge and understanding of their bodies

This semester in Years 3 to 6, the focus has been to build positive relationships with all people, demonstrating respect for self and others, showing empathy towards others, valuing diversity and managing relationships which included how we build and maintain friendships with one another.  It has been wonderful to watch the interactions between children change for the better over time.  In all aspects of health lessons in Years 3 to 6 there is always a connection made to Spiritual health.  The children are reminded that they are gifts from God and that their good health and well-being is important.  The children make many connections to the life of Jesus and the messages he relates to us in the scriptures.

The Year 3’s were privileged to have the Malaga Fire Safety Officers come and visit earlier this semester.  They were extremely excited and very well-informed about the importance of having a ‘home fire plan’ organized in their homes.

SCIENCE NEWS – Year 1

This term, the Year Ones studied Earth and Space Sciences and the observable changes that occur in the sky and landscape.  The children learnt about the phases of the moon, recorded short and longer patterns of events that occur on Earth and in the sky, such as the sun appearing during the day, the appearance of the moon and stars at night, the weather and the seasons. We made it rain in the classroom and realized how much the weather affects us.

HEALTH NEWS – Year 2

This Term in Year 2, the children learnt how to distinguish between what is and is not an emergency situation and the procedure to call on emergency services. The children were developed their own emergency scenario and practiced calling the operator who asked them the specific questions used. The children also identified the different emotions we experience and strategies to help regulate them. We focused on ‘ANGER’ as this is one of the hardest emotions to regulate.
