Year One Class Newsletter

Welcome to Term Three! The children are excited to be back at school and are settling in well.

Our Religious Education program for this term begins with the unit ‘Loving Others’. This unit will help us explore the many things that our bodies and senses can do and how Jesus wants everyone to use their bodies to show love and respect for all people. The second unit, To ‘Love by Working’, enables the children to express ways people could work by caring for themselves, others and creation as Jesus taught. The third unit, ‘We Belong’, gives the children the opportunity to wonder at God who created people to belong. The children will explore how people become members of God’s family through Baptism and focus on how people can continue to show love in the groups to which they belong.

This term, our inquiry based unit focusses on ‘I Wonder – How does our Earth work?’ We will investigate the location of the equator and the northern and southern hemispheres,  the weather and seasons of places and the ways in which different cultural groups describe them. To deepen student’s understanding of our Earth, we will visit the Perth Zoo where the children will explore animals from the northern and southern hemispheres. This will extend to our Literacy Dedicated Time, where the children will be looking closely at informative texts. The students will learn about the features of informative texts and develop their reading comprehension skills by finding key details within the text. During writing, they will research a chosen animal before writing their own animal report. Technologies and The Arts will be integrated into the children’s learning as they explore their chosen animals. The students will design and create an animal using felt, needles and thread and then use digital technology to evaluate their creations.

In Mathematics, we will continue investigating numbers to one hundred by skip counting by five and ten and we will explore numbers that are greater than and less than a given number. We will learn to represent and solve simple addition and subtraction problems using a range of strategies including counting-on, partitioning and rearranging parts. Through hands- on experiences we will begin counting collections to one hundred by partitioning numbers using place value. Later in the term, we will begin our study of Australian coins. Students will learn to recognise, describe and order coins according to their value. This is something that can be further investigated at home and when shopping, as it helps children to relate their learning to real life situations.

In Science, the Year Ones will explore chemical science with a focus on predicting and comparing how the shapes of objects made from different materials can be physically changed through actions such as bending, stretching and twisting. We will also explore how materials such as water, chocolate or play dough change when warmed or cooled. We will conduct experiments, manipulate materials, develop new vocabulary and identify materials that are edible.

In Health this term, we will begin the term by focusing on the ways in which the body changes as individuals grow older and develop personal strengths and how these change over time. The children will acknowledge what makes them unique by identifying personal strengths, achievements, and what they can do now that are in Year One compared to being a one year old. We will also look at bullying and practice strategies that may help the children deal with a situation if it should arise.

In Physical Education with Miss Witkowski this term, the Year One children will be preparing for their upcoming Athletics Carnival. They will be practising their sprints and team games including Circle ball, Tunnel ball, Flag Relay, and Egg and Spoon. Each child will be encouraged to beat their personal bests. We will also be continuing to develop fundamental movement skills such as skipping; with children aiming to get their locomotor license by the end of the year.

In Term 3 Music, Miss Condipodero will continue building a wide repertoire of songs and music games with the children to develop pitch and intonation and gain the confidence to use singing voices. We will be establishing a deeper understanding of beat and known rhythms through songs, improvisation, movement, listening and responding activities and dictations. We will be learning how to use and layer ostinato in one and two parts using body percussion and movement and we will be building on our knowledge of the elements of music – particularly tempo and dynamics, and how they are used in music to create meaning, expression and structure.
