YEAR FOUR CLASS NEWS

Term Two already… time sure does fly by when you’re having fun! In Year Four we have been super busy learning lots of new and exciting things.

In Religious Education, the Year Fours have been learning about God, the creator of life and what a wonderful gift human life is. We have been learning how important it is for us to respect our lives and the lives of others by obeying the Fifth Commandment. We have also been learning about the Seven Sacraments and the symbols that signify each of these.

During English we have been practising our reading comprehension strategies, while reading our classroom novel ‘Matilda’. We are thoroughly enjoying our reading circles as we get to take turns to read the class novel aloud.

We are using our writing time to write biographies and persuasive texts. We have already written biographies about Neil Armstrong and Arthur Phillip. From writing these biographies we have learnt lots of new interesting facts, for example; did you know Arthur Phillip was a Captain in the First Fleet? Or that Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon?

Four White are currently in the process of writing a persuasive text to convince Miss Ziino why it is a good idea for her to bring in OREO biscuits for the entire class. While Four Blue are persuading Miss O’Connor with their opinions to the question ‘Should junk food be banned from schools?’

During Mathematics, we have been learning how to convert between units of time and determine times of the day as ‘am’ and ‘pm’. Every Tuesday afternoon we break up into four groups and get to work with either with Miss O’Connor, Miss Ziino, Mrs Tampalini and Ms Spadaccini. Each week we rotate and have the opportunity to work with a different teacher to develop our mathematic skills. For the next four rotations we will be learning about different forms of measurement.

In Year Four our Integrated Studies have had us researching about the First Fleet. We have been busy learning about life in Britain during the late 1700s, the First Fleet, the arrival into Botany Bay and we have even researched what it would have been like to be a convict. We decided that we wouldn’t survive living life as a convict. The extreme conditions in the hulks did not sound like fun!

We have also learnt about being sustainable and have been practising this daily in our classroom by reducing the amount of power we use, recycling items and reusing items. We even created sustainable artwork using reusable materials.

In Physical Education with Miss Witkowski, the Year Four children will be working on their basketball skills as well as getting ready for the Cross Country later this term.

During STEAM, we have been busy planning and getting our ideas ready for the ‘Screen It’ competition. This competition allows us a chance to show off our talents through group or individual moving-image entries. We can choose either to produce a movie, stop motion or a game. This year the theme is ‘Curious’. It is safe to say there are many curious children in Year Four. Stay tuned to see what we produce…

SPORT NEWS

CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL

As you are aware our Faction Cross Country Carnival is in Week 7. Currently the children are preparing for the Carnival during Physical Education and our Running Club. Running Club is held every Wednesday and Friday morning, with the last day being Wednesday 13 June. Long Distance Running is an integral part of the Physical Education Curriculum and all children in Year 1 – Year 6 are required to participate. The aim of the carnival is participation, so all children are encouraged to give it a go.

CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL DETAILS

Venue:       Lightning Park

Date:          Friday 15 June 2018

On the day, a bus will shuttle each year level to and from Lightning Park. The timetable for the day is below; however, please note that these times are a guide and we may be running ahead or behind time. The children need to bring their hat and drink bottle with them on the bus and a jacket if they need it. The children are allowed to wear a t-shirt in the colour of their faction to school on that day (similar to last year’s Athletics Carnival). If they are unable to find a shirt then we will provide coloured bibs. Our Year 6 Wellness Ministry will be providing support throughout the day. Parents are welcome to attend and cheer on their children. There is plenty of parking and parents  are asked to use the steps and pavilion to watch the children race and avoid going near the track. As this is a winter event we will go ahead if there is light rain. The carnival will not proceed in the event of a storm. The children are encouraged to bring their white sport shirt and school jacket to put on after the race if it rains.

The permission slip was sent home earlier this week need to be returned ASAP. Please return the note to your classroom teacher or through the online system.

Everyone has been really enthusiastic about developing these fundamental body management skills. It is great to see the effort and enjoyment that is going in to this exciting learning experience. With one week to go, the students have been shown and have practiced their culminating gymnastics routine.

STUDENT MINISTRIES NEWS

Christian Service in Year One

Over the past few weeks, the Christian Service Ministry have been going to both Year One classrooms to help them get settled in the morning.  We help them with their activities by explaining what they need to do or helping them read and spell words.  There were many different activities that they rotate around and we made sure that all the Year Ones are on task.  We enjoy helping the Year Ones and will continue to help them throughout this term.
