Year Three Class News

Term Four has been a very special term as the Year Three children received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. They prepared for this Sacrament by reflecting on and learning from the parables that Jesus told about forgiving everyone for their sins. The children gathered together at a retreat run by 24:7 School Ministry and further explored, how through this Sacrament, they can remain close friends with God.

In Religious Education, the children have also learnt about the special feast of Mary, the Mother of God which occurs on 1 January. Recently, our focus has shifted towards preparing for Advent where the children are listening to stories about Jesus’ birth and beginning to create Advent wreaths.

In English, our focus has been on the precision of language and how adverbs, adjectives and verbs can enhance writing. The children have been busy consolidating their understanding of the text structures for narratives, recounts, retells and procedures. Inferential comprehension continues to be a major focus in Reading. In class the children have looked at how they can infer, by reading between the lines and applying their own knowledge to create an understanding of the text.

In Mathematics, the Year Threes have explored patterns in numbers, with a particular focus on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They have solved sums involving Australian money and are busy classifying angles in the environment.

This term in the Year Three Humanities and Social Science program, the children have focused on the geography of the climatic regions of the world. The Year Three children have learnt the difference between climate and weather and are busy applying this new understanding to create a short documentary. They have also looked at the different textures and patterns in Art as they have studied collages and recreated their own climatic landscapes. In History, later in the term, children will focus on studying different holidays and celebrations in Australian culture. They will learn about the history of these events and how they impact Australian culture today.

In Science, with Mr Capolingua, the children have learnt about Chemical Sciences which is the change of state between solid and liquid by adding or removing heat. They have been busy investigating how liquids and solids respond to changes in temperature, for example, water changing to ice, or melting chocolate and exploring how changes from solid to liquid and liquid to solid can help us recycle materials.

In Physical Education, with Miss Witkowski, the Year Three children have been focusing on the fundamental movement skills of kicking, hopping and dodging. Kicking and game tactics have been explored through mini soccer activities and games.

In Health, with Mrs King, the Year Threes have been exploring health information (media and online) that influence decisions and behaviours when making informed choices. They are busy engaging in opportunities to create their own advertising promotions. The children have also investigated different kinds of activities that promote physical and emotional health for indoor and outdoor environments.

Year Three has been a busy, fun filled year! We can’t wait to be Year Fours.

Excursion to Perth Hills Discovery Centre

On Monday 11 October the Year Three Students went to Perth Hills Discovery Centre to learn more about Noongar culture. The Year Threes arrived at school ready to go on the bus and mini bus. The Year Threes were so excited they rushed onto the bus ready. It took us 45 minutes to arrive at the Perth Hills Discovery Centre, but we didn’t mind as it was so fun on the bus.

We finally got there and were allowed to eat recess. We had a good time eating, but then it was time for hunting time for 3W and Artwork for 3B. Allegra was the grandma and Massimo was the Grandpa. They all hunted for snakes, kangaroos, lizards and eggs. Meanwhile 3B was making different unique artefacts and facial arts, they also made Noongar jewellery and were told stories.

We soon finished and stopped what we were doing to eat lunch. Then we swapped activities. 3B went hunting. Olivia G, Sophie, and Tayla were all Grandmas. Riley, Dylan, Henry were all Grandpas and they all went hunting for kangaroos, snakes, lizard and eggs and lit a fire to cook the food. While that happened 3W were having their face painted with traditional dot designs and making artefacts too.  They also heard a story about a warra wirrin (bad spirit)  who catches children who are up to no good at nightime.

Soon it was time to go home.  All the staff said goodbye to us. We all collected our artefacts while we walking to the bus. Everyone was astonished with how their faces looked in the mirror. On the bus we had a sing-a-long and arrived back to school exhausted from our excursion. We all had fun at the Hills Discovery Centre. Our favourite part was when we went hunting because we went and got to spear a fake kangaroo.

YEAR FIVE SUMMER LIGHTNING CARNIVAL
The Year Five students will be participating in the CPSSA Summer Lightning Carnival. The Carnival is this Friday, 16 November from 10.00am to 2.00pm. Children will compete in either Tennis, Ultimate Frisbee or Cricket against other schools in our Association. Both Ultimate Frisbee and Cricket will be held at Yokine Reserve with Tennis at Noranda Netball Courts. Friday is going to be really hot so students are reminded to bring plenty of water, and wear their hats and sunscreen. Good luck to our students.

TENNIS
Our School has been very lucky to have partnered up with Bayswater Tennis Club and Tennis Australia to deliver an exciting tennis program. At the end of last term, the Lower Primary students got a taste of tennis with a really fun tennis day. This Term, students in Year Four to Six have participated in a four-week tennis program. It has been amazing to see the development, success and enthusiasm that our students have had for tennis. Physical activity needs to be life-long and tennis is one of those great sports that you can play for a really long time. Well done to our budding tennis stars!
