Year Five News

The year continues to be full of exciting learning opportunities in the final term of Year Five.

In Religious Education, the Year Five children will be learning about the Sacrament of Penance as they walk with the Year Three students on their special journey. The children have started to reflect on the basic purpose of the human body to communicate goodness to others and how Jesus gave his followers the Sacrament of Penance to forgive people’s sins, and to restore their relationship with God. Later in the term, as the children begin to reflect on experiences of inner strength in their own lives they will be invited to wonder at God the Creator of their souls and their inner strength to do what is loving and good. As they learn about Advent and Christmas, the children will celebrate Jesus who is the fulfilment of God’s promise to send a Saviour. They will reflect on the Tenth Commandment, calling them to be satisfied with having what they need.

In English, the children will continue to practise the comprehension strategies (finding word meaning in context, interpreting figurative language and recognising cause and effect) to develop a deeper meaning from the texts they read. The children have started reading informative texts on countries in North and South America, as well as a variety of fiction texts. In their writing, they will continue to build on their skills through narratives, persuasive texts and information reports. The Year Fives have started to learn about the structure and language features of informative texts and later on in the term, will continue to learn about and use figurative language and persuasive devices suitable for the text type they are writing.

In Mathematics, the children are extending their understanding of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) using both mental and written strategies to solve more complex problems with numbers up to the millions. They will then begin to learn about the grid reference system and describe routes and landmarks using directional language. The children will learn how to transform 2D shapes by enlarging the original image using a variety of digital technologies and graph paper. To complete their learning in statistics, they will design survey questions, collect data in tables and construct dot plots to display the data.

In Humanities and Social Sciences, the children are researching and discovering the main characteristics (climate, natural vegetation, landforms, native animals) of the continents of North and South America, and the location of the major countries in relation to Australia. The children will complete research and organise important information using a variety of methods. Using all their gathered information, they will create a documentary on a chosen country, working with their peers and using the green screen. While working in a group, the children will use decision-making processes to consider different points of view, develop possible solutions and plan for action.

During Art, they will continue to explore artworks from various artists and investigate the different techniques and styles they use. The children will then analyse the approaches used by the artists to communicate ideas, beliefs and opinions and develop and apply these techniques and processes to inspire their own artwork.

This term in Health, the Year Fives will be identifying and exploring reliable sources of information that inform health, safety and wellbeing. This will include the current issues around cigarettes and smoking. To support this investigation, they will learn about how the lungs and respiratory system work to sustain life. As part of their learning, the children will also be participating in games that promote health and wellbeing.

During Sport, the children have started learning all about the rules and skills associated with tennis.

In Science, the children will be learning about light and shadows and how light can be absorbed, reflected and refracted.

This term in Technology sessions, the Year Five children will become mini inventors! They will use the LittleBit STEAM kits to go through the engineering process from designing, building, testing and improving inventions. Their task is to design and build an invention that uses light in a functional way. Students will then create an interactive diagram using the Ozobot robots to explain how a functioning circuit controls and emits light.

We have thoroughly enjoyed Year Five and the many exciting learning opportunities we have been a part of. We are eager to #ExpectGreatThings of ourselves, our teachers and each other as we move into Year Six and become the leaders of our school.

Faction Athletics Carnival

Last Friday we held our Faction Athletics Carnival and it turned out to be an amazing day! It was wonderful to see all of the children trying their best to earn points for their faction. All of the children from Pre-Primary to Year Six must be congratulated for their effort, team work and cheering. In the end, after a closely fought battle Lima (Red) was our winning faction for 2018.

I would like to thank all of the parents and teachers who helped throughout the day. Without your support the day would not have run so smoothly. I would also like to thank the Wellness Ministry who did a fantastic job helping in their bays and supporting wherever they were needed.

Interschool Athletics Carnival

Some of our athletes will compete in the CPSSA Interschool Athletics Carnival. This will be held on Friday 26 October at the State Athletics Track. Permission slips and details about morning training have been given out to the children who have been selected.

Below is a list of our Champion Boys and Girls from Year Three-Six. The Athletics records have also been updated with some of the children breaking the records from last year. The timing gates now mean we can keep these records.  The updated list is included below.
