YEAR SIX CLASS NEWS
The Year Sixes have been busy this term!!
The students have recently received the Sacrament of Confirmation which we have been preparing for all term. The Year Sixes have a very good knowledge and understanding of the seven gifts and nine fruits of the Holy Spirit. As part of preparation for Confirmation we participated in a retreat held at the Parish Centre. This was a fantastic day and we really enjoyed working with one another to learn more about the sacrament.
We are now learning about the ways in which we can wonder at creation and the resources on Earth. This unit introduces the key elements of The Last Supper, the meaning of the Eucharist and the prayers, responses and gestures used during the Eucharist.
During our English dedicated time the children have been busy writing persuasive texts about ‘why children should do chores around the house’. These are some of the opinions of the Year Six students:
‘The government has proven that children need to do chores because it will make them more mature and responsible. Don’t you want your child to be responsible?’ – Alexsia 6B
‘Children should do chores around the house as it decreases stress levels for adults. This happens because adults are relied on for everything and children should be doing chores around the house to help out’. – Allyra 6B
‘It is a definite fact that children are not doing enough chores. They are simply far too lazy. They just sit on the couch all day or more commonly they play video games. If chores were done, as a result more children would be healthier.’ – Terry 6B
‘As far I’m concerned, statistics show that 60% of all parents are stressed when it comes to housework because they are the ones doing it all. I believe it is important for children to do chores and help their parents out.’ – Annabelle 6W
‘Would you want your child to not know how to empty the dishwasher and fold the washing? Well, that is why children need to help out at home.’ – Bianca 6W
During Mathematics we have been learning about measurement and connecting different measuring units of measure to the appropriate situation.
The children have participated in a variety of hands on activities making mathematics meaningful. We measured our height, our weight, the width of our shoulders, the capacity of our school drink bottles and the circumference of our waists! We loved connecting our understandings of measurement to real life.
To complement our studies of Asia the children have researched Chinese pottery and ceramics. They are currently making a ceramic piece of art reflecting a particular Chinese dynasty throughout history.
The children have been learning about the location of major countries within the Asia region and their relation to Australia. The students have researched the geographical diversity of these places and their connection to Australia. As part of this we have been discussing and investigating migration and immigration, and the reasons why people would migrate to Australia.
What a fantastic term we have had in Year Six. We are looking forward to what the rest of the year has in store for us! #ExpectGreatThings

THE DAY THE FIRE FIGHTERS VISITED INFANT JESUS SCHOOL
What a surprise! On Thursday 7 June, the Year Threes had an incursion about fire safety. We were excited to have fire fighters come from Malaga Fire Station. Fire fighters Brett, Richard and John, as well as Station Officer John arrived at 1:30pm.
Firstly, we were introduced to fire hazards. Fire fighter John and Brett showed us posters on unsafe and safe situations that involve fire. Sabelle from 3W was chosen as a volunteer to demonstrate the safe thing to do when there is smoke; ‘stop, drop, crawl/roll’.
Next was the most enjoyable part of the incursion. All the Year Threes lined up in two straight lines to walk over to the oval. To our amazement there was a big, red fire truck parked near the Grotto. Everyone was in awe! Station Officer John showed us around the truck and the purpose of different parts on the truck. Then one by one we got to climb through the passenger seat to look around the interior. The lucky last part of this event was the best! We took turns squirting the hose over the Year One and Two playground. Yay!
Unfortunately it was then time for the fire fighters to leave. While the Years Threes waved them goodbye, their sirens were blaring loudly. It was a memorable day because now we all know what to do in a fire emergency. Our favourite part of when we got to spray water out of the hose.
