PRE-PRIMARY CLASS NEWS
In Pre-Primary, we are looking forward to a busy, and short nine-week term. The Pre-Primary students have settled back into the routines of school and seem eager and excited to learn. We are also excited to have many opportunities for play and to continue to develop our social and emotional skills and well-being.
Last week, we enjoyed reading books about mums and talked about how important and special they are to us. We were also very lucky to have a parent helper come in and show us how to make a bath bomb, which we then gave to our Mums for Mothers’ Day. It was also a lovely opportunity for us to attend the Mothers’ Day Mass at Infant Jesus Church.
This term in Religious Education, we will be exploring three units; beginning with, ‘I can talk to God’. This unit covers the way we communicate with others and with God, for example, through prayers and reflection. Throughout this topic we will learn the many ways that we can communicate, both verbally and non-verbally, and what an exciting gift it is that God has given to us.
We will then explore ‘The Church Community’, which links to our Health Program as we discuss trusted people within the community and community helpers. We also will explore how Jesus belonged to communities and how he also wants us to belong to communities such as the Church.
Our final Religious Education unit for the term is ‘Celebrate’, in which we discuss how people gather to celebrate special occasions, such as birthdays and weddings. We will also learn how the Eucharist is a way of remembering the special meal that Jesus celebrated with his friends. At the end of this unit, we hope to have our own special celebration with our friends at school.
This term in English we will continue to develop our sound knowledge through the Sound Waves Phonics Program. We have really enjoyed learning all the chants and actions so far. Each week we look forward to finding out what the new sounds are. These sounds will continue to be posted on Seesaw each week for parents to see. Many of us have also been using our sound knowledge to sound out CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and learn some new tricky words. We continue to have-a-go at sounding out and listening for the sounds we can hear in words to create sentences.
This term we will have many opportunities to engage in writing experiences, particularly around the topic of fairy tales. Throughout the term we will continue to build on our reading knowledge and learn strategies that we can use when reading such as, using picture cues. During guided reading we will have the opportunity to predict, comprehend, sound out and use our expanding knowledge of high frequency words.
In mathematics, we will continue to engage in hands-on learning experiences to extend our knowledge and skills. This term we continue to focus on our number knowledge, for example; counting to and from twenty, recognising written numerals, connecting quantities to numbers, whilst also exploring other concepts such as;
- measurement – comparing objects according to their length, mass and capacity,
- sorting objects into groups – by colour, size etc,
- patterning – by colour, object etc, and
- using positional language to describe location – on top, behind etc.
Science – This term in science we are exploring weather. We have been observing and recording the changes we can see in the weather each day. We will also discuss and discover things such as; the way that we modify our behaviour and dress for different conditions.
Physical Education – This term in physical education, with Miss Witkowski, we have had the opportunity to discuss and write a sentence about how exercise can keep them healthy and well. We will also work on our fundamental movements skills (walking, running, hopping and jumping) in simple games. These games will also give us more opportunity to develop our cooperation and team work skills.
Music – This term in music, Miss Condipodero will continue working with the Pre-Primary students to develop their intonation and pitch through singing and learning a wide variety of songs, using the solfa pentatonic scale and the solfa hand signs. We will listen and respond to music through movement and play and share our music ideas. We will continue to establish understanding of beat and rhythm through the use of percussion instruments, rhythm activities and songs. Students are also being introduced to some of the other elements of music including, tempo and dynamics.
Technologies – This term during technologies sessions in the iLab, we will be integrating our class work on fairy tales while completing a series of design tasks. For each fairy tale covered in class, we will be given a problem that we have to design and create a solution for, based around a series of constraints. We will also use different creation apps to evaluate their learning. We begin by helping Jack get down from the top of the beanstalk. He is trapped at the top and the giant is getting closer! We will be designing and creating a contraption to bring Jack safely down a zip line, from the top of the beanstalk to the bottom.
