Technology News: Year Five Woodside Incursion

On Tuesday afternoon the Year Five students had an incursion from the ‘Woodside: Promoting STEM in Schools’ program. Angus, a process engineer, spoke to the students about different STEM based careers and what the life of an engineer entails – he even got to go to work in a helicopter!  After that, the students had to build an ‘oil and gas reservoir’ using bread, vegemite and sprinkles! The Year Five’s then had to drill exploration wells with a straw and assess the cores to determine if they had hit oil!

‘During the Woodside incursion, a Woodside engineer visited our school to tell us about what fuel is made out of and how it is made. What I enjoyed about the Woodside incursion is how we got to learn about how people get fuel and gas because I now know what it is made out of.  Angus is a very good teacher because I learnt a lot from him.’ – Cate A from 5B

‘Woodside visited our school for an incursion to further our STEAM learning. Angus was the presenter that came in to talk about what his job is and what it involves. We watched a clip about how fuel is collected and did an activity where we pretended to collect fuel. We used bread, vegemite, sprinkles and had straws, it was fun. Parent Presentation: Cyber-Safety

In Term Two, our school will have the pleasure of hosting Paul Litherland for a second time. Paul is a renowned cyber-safety speaker and owner of Surf Online Safe. He will be presenting one parent session, to be held on the 2nd of May at 6.30pm in the Library (Week One, Term Two).

Paul will share his experiences as a WA Police Officer in the Technology Crime Investigation Unit and speak about the need for students and parents to remember the impact of their digital footprint, maintain levels of privacy when using apps and apply methods to remain safe in an online environment.

Paul’s parent presentations will cover a wide range of topics and will last between 1 to 1.5hours depending on questions. Subjects covered may include:

• Cyber Bullying – Legislation surrounding this and how it is affecting our children.
• Digital Citizenship – Where our children are going online, the Apps they are using and the information they are sharing.
• Online Footprint – How easy it is to find children online and what they can do to minimise their risk.
• Social Networking & Networking in general – How the systems work and how to overcome their reach.
• Online Gaming and Website Use – Risks and uses.
• Tips & Tricks – How to keep an eye on your children through software and hardware. Easy instructions on what we can do to keep them safe.

Paul is very much in demand and has been presenting to children and parents at a number of schools over the years. Coincidently, Paul’s family are parishioners at the Infant Jesus Parish and Paul’s grandfather helped to build the original Church and school!
