YEAR FIVE CLASS NEWS

#ExpectGreatThings has guided the behaviour and learning in our energetic, collaborative and supportive Year 5 classrooms.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

The Year Fives have recognised ways they are uniquely special by understanding that God wants people to serve as His fellow-workers. They do this by contributing to the development of themselves, particularly their gifts, others and creation. The children learnt that through the Sacrament of Baptism, Jesus calls members of God’s family, the Church, to continue his special work. They brainstormed ways they could do right and continue this special work by living by the third and seventh commandments. They learnt that the Seventh Commandment asks people to contribute to others and creation by their work activities. The Year Fives learnt the importance of doing their fair share of work in homes, school and local communities.

While following the journey of Jesus during Lent, the children have wondered at their ability to choose what is right. They learnt about moral choices and developed strategies to help them make choices right like Jesus always did.

ENGLISH

A big focus in the Year Five Guided Reading Program has been on comprehension and developing their understanding and use of the comprehension strategies. During reading, the children will continue to focus on ways to better comprehend texts by using a variety of reading strategies to interpret and understand the message and intent of the author.

In writing, the Year Fives have been learning about ways to add detail which they achieved through the use of adjectives, adverbs, synonyms and vocabulary.  The children wrote a creative narrative using their own theme and ideas on the stimulus ‘In the Middle of the Night’. They are continuing to develop their understanding of complex sentences and how to make their writing more engaging to the reader.

The children were asked to write a persuasive text on, ‘Why rules and laws are important to our society?’ They included persuasive techniques in their arguments to craft ideas and effectively contribute to their position on the topic. The Year Five children strongly believe rules and laws are important to society.

MATHEMATICS

In Mathematics, the Year Five children have explored place value of numbers up to the millions. They have also focused on developing their mathematical vocabulary and understanding and what the words mean. They now know that place value means that the value of the digit changes depending on its place in the number. They are proud to have developed the ability to calculate factors and multiples of numbers and multiply large two-digit numbers independently.

To guide the students with their learning, the children have been accessing a MicrosoftSway with explanations and examples on the mathematical concepts they have been taught. The link to the reference book is:

HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

The Year Five children were very excited to participate in a classroom election while they were learning about participating in Australia’s democracy. The Year Five children took part in an incursion presented by The Constitution Centre where they learnt about the key values that underpin Australia’s democracy; including freedom, equality, fairness and justice. Using these values, they then explored the roles and responsibilities of electors and developed their own campaign posters and policies.

After listening to speeches written by the candidates, the students experienced the key features of the electoral process in Australia, such as compulsory voting, secret ballot and preferential voting. They then voted to elect a President and Vice President for each classroom.

The children explored how regulations and laws affect the lives of citizens and researched the roles and responsibilities of key personnel in law enforcement and in the legal system. The students used their research to write a script and then filmed a “Green Screen Video” to explain the role of the key personnel in our society.

In Year Five we are eager to continue to learn, grow and try our best. We will continue to #ExpectGreatThings of ourselves, our teachers and of each other.
