Year Four News

Year Four have settled back into routines and are super excited about this term!

In Religious Education we have already started to prepare to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist by further developing our knowledge and understandings. Last week in art, using clay, we created our own chalices. This week we are going to paint them gold. They are going to look fantastic!

In preparing for the Sacrament of the Eucharist this means that we have a lot of important days ahead. So, please ensure you have the following dates in your diary:

  • Monday 13 August – First Eucharist Parent Night
  • Monday 27 August – First Eucharist Parent/Child Workshop
  • Friday 7 September – First Eucharist Retreat and Practice
  • Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September – Eucharist Masses

We are also learning about God and how God loves everyone equally despite their differences. So far, we have identified the many differences between us, which made us realise that each of us are special in our own way. We also discussed how Jesus taught his followers that they should love like God and describes the different ways Jesus preached this.

This term in English, we have started to read a class novel. Four White are reading ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ and Four Blue are reading ‘The Indian in the Cupboard’. This term we also commenced writing stations which we are really enjoying. We get to work on a different aspect of writing each day, creating wonderful sentences each week at the Sentence Station. We will be discovering language features used in poetry, so our parents and families can expect to hear lots of puns this term!

In Mathematics, we have been learning about fractions and exploring the relationship between families of fractions (halves, quarters, eighths, thirds and sixths). We have also been learning about money. Whilst learning about money we had to complete an investigation called ‘A Day at Leisure Land’. For the investigation we had to pretend our grandparents gave us $100 to spend at ‘Leisure Land’. As you can imagine, we were devastated that this wasn’t real and that we couldn’t really go to ‘Leisure Land’! To complete the investigation, we were required to spend as close to $100 as we could. The conditions included buying recess and lunch, watching an event and buying a souvenir for our ‘brother.’ It wasn’t an easy investigation, but we thoroughly enjoyed completing it!

Throughout Humanities and Social Sciences, we have been identifying the main types of vegetation, including forest, savannah, grassland, woodland and desert, and explaining the relationship between climate and natural vegetation. We have also been exploring strategies to protect particular environments that provide the habitats for animals. Later this term we will be exploring what the local government does, including the services it provides (for example, environment and waste, libraries, etc.). In Week Four, we will be having an incursion from the Constitutional Centre of Western Australia – Which we are super excited about! They will be talking to us about; our local council, the services it provides and local services needing improvement.

During STEAM, we have been busy producing films, games and animations for our ‘Screen It’ competition. This competition allows us a chance to show off our talents through group or individual moving-image entries. This year the theme is ‘Curious’, it is safe to say there are many curious children in Year Four. Stay tuned to see what we produce…

Central to our learning this term is also consolidating the work we have previously completed during the Protective Behaviours Program. This program is based on two key themes: “We all have the right to feel safe at all times” and “We can talk with someone about anything, no matter what it is”. Topics covered include the importance of personal space, body awareness and having a network of people to turn to when we feel unsafe. The children will learn how to use body language and tone of voice in achieving assertiveness in situations where they feel unsafe.

In Science this term, we have been looking at forces and how they can be exerted by one object on another through direct contact or from a distance. We will closely look at friction, gravity and magnetism. The children will discover that everything on Earth is powered by forces, pushes and pulls which act on our bodies and the things around us. forces make things move and stop moving.

We are excited about the fantastic start to the term and the many experiences that we will have in our learning in Year Four.

Tuning In To Kids Parenting Program 2018

Would you like to talk so your kids will listen and listen so your kids will talk?

Tuning In To Kids is a program for parents that focuses on strengthening the emotional bonds between parents and children.

Parents learn skills in emotion coaching, recognising, understanding and responding to their child`s emotions in an accepting, supportive way.
